John Cale & Terry Riley - Church of Anthrax

Absolutely fabulous collaborative effort from John Cale and Terry Riley. Totally cruising hypnotism never losing sight of their respective identities. Cale returns to early form, tapping in the hallucinatory vein of VU-yore, while Riley breaks free from formalism. The saxophone embellishments of "In C" are represented with temperate fluidity. The snake charmer plays for the concert piano, ever intertwined and melted down into an acidy reverberation. This cermony occurs in a palace of progressive rock 'n' roll shimmies and dazzling jazzy shifts. Eastern meditation on western rebellion.

Mayhem - Deathcrush

Debut, 1987 release from legendary Norwegian Black Metal pioneers, Mayhem. The group's frontman, Per Yngve Ohlin (aka Dead) committed suicide and was found by their guitarist, Euronymous, on the floor with his wrists slashed and his face blown off by a shotgun. According to Black Metal lore, prior to calling the police, Euronymous collected some of his dead bandmate's splattered brain and skull fragments. Later, he made a stew from the brains, which he consumed, and jewelry from the shards of bone, which he wore. Euronymous was eventually stabbed to death by the band's bass-player, Varg Vikernes. Vikernes was tried and sentenced to 21 years for the murder. In addition, Vikernes, a radical neo-facist was tried and convicted for burning down churches in Norway. He has recorded from prison under the moniker, Burzum.

Motiffe - Motiffe

Very complex British progressive rock from 1972. Motiffe's sole effort was completely home-recorded and portrays a group of technically advanced beasts of instrumentation heavily inspired by The Mothers of Invention. Exciting piano driven rock compositions complete with orchestral frills executed with such magical grace and seamless precision. The murky, rough DIY production sounds medium gray and soft, like walking through a ghost forever.

Franco Battiato - Battiato (aka Zá)

1979 release featuring two long, instrumental tracks clocking in around 19 minutes each. Primarly acoustic piano playing on both pieces. The merciless, icy incessance of Side A is countered on B by warm tantric arppegiations that teeter on the brink of a synthetic realm.

Franco Battiato - Clic

'74 release from Italian experimental composer Franco Battiato. Musique Concrète aburdities a la Faust with lithe keyboard situations, just east of Heldon--fresh from a space ship.
